Nicola is an artist whose interest lie in the relationship between human and non-human and those vulnerabilities that exist around land ecologies. Her researched-based art practice is related to the materiality of the earth, and the ecological loss associated with land use and time. She works in several mediums, ceramics, film, sound and many more. The ‘slow’ nature of her practice is deeply connected to observation, collection and processes. This is naturally inherent in earth's history and within nature but also a deliberate choice. The reflexive and meaningful strategy she adoptes highlights a need for a slower deeper philosophical approach to thinking and encourages a more considered dialogue, highlighting our lack of long-term thinking. Nicola is exploring the simile of taking the non-human, as humans do and subverting its meaning and existence by process and manipulation.
Her methods reflect early man’s endeavour into first technologies, up to modern digital technologies, capturing the physical phenomena of a personal experience whilst being aware of its threatened nature. She employs a series of processes exploring the ephemeral elements of “place”, through materiality, and our senses, capturing this at a moment in time for the potential use in the future.
The direction of her work has changed at specific points in time. As a sculptor, she has been and still is interested in object art, but after attending a glaze workshop she soon realised the potential to explore materiality from a new perspective. This has resulted in the development of a material-based research practice, enabling her to explore the themes and ideas of which she is passionate, through a more meaningful and engaging process using her skills learnt over time.
